History of Mont-Saint-Michel: Summary

Explore the rich history of Mont-Saint-Michel through ourthoughtfully crafted in-depth overview. Dive into each intricately presented segment, taking a chronological journey to uncover the origins, transformations, and profound cultural significance of this iconic structure.

Here’s a periodic overview of the history of Mont-Saint-Michel:

In 708, a vision of the Archangel Michael instructed Bishop Aubert of Avranches to build a sanctuary on the rocky islet that would later become Mont-Saint-Michel. In response, construction of the first oratorium, dedicated to Saint Michael, began on the islet in 709.

By the 8th century, Mont-Saint-Michel had become a popular pilgrimage site due to its connection to the Archangel Michael, attracting pilgrims from all over Europe.

In 966, the Normans conquered Mont-Saint-Michel and Benedictine monks established a community on the islet. Under the Benedictines, Mont-Saint-Michel reached its zenith of power and influence. In the 11th century, construction of the abbey church, the heart of the abbey complex, began.

The abbey church was completed in the 12th century, and the construction of the “Merveille,” a three-story complex housing the monks’ living quarters, marked the pinnacle of Mont-Saint-Michel’s architectural splendor. Mont-Saint-Michel became a major center of learning and culture, attracting pilgrims and scholars from all over Europe.

The Hundred Years’ War between England and France, which began in 1337, significantly impacted Mont-Saint-Michel. Despite withstanding several sieges, the abbey was forced to adapt to the changing times. In the 14th century, the Flamboyant Gothic spire on the abbey church was constructed, adding to the abbey’s architectural grandeur.

In the 16th century, the Benedictine monastic life at Mont-Saint-Michel declined, and the abbey lost its status as an independent commune, becoming part of the French monarchy. The abbey’s position as a religious center continued to weaken, and it was eventually turned into a prison during the French Revolution.

In 1860, Mont-Saint-Michel was secularized and opened to the public as a tourist attraction. Restoration efforts, led by architects Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and Prosper Mérimée, began in 1922, preserving and revitalizing Mont-Saint-Michel. In 1979, a causeway was constructed to improve access to the island, but it also reduced the impact of tides, altering the abbey’s relationship with its surroundings.

Mont-Saint-Michel was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, recognizing its cultural and historical significance. Ongoing preservation efforts ensure Mont-Saint-Michel’s enduring legacy, as it continues to attract 2.3 million visitors annually, remaining one of France’s most iconic landmarks.

Mont-Saint Michel is a touristic attraction not easy to reach and it is a good option (also good value for money) to have the transportation with the tour if you are into visiting this place. You will have around 4 hours for the abbey and nearby village which is enough. But get prepared that it is a long way to and back to Paris, around 4,5 – 5 hours for each direction; which is quite tiresome. 4* GetYourGuide traveler – United Arab Emirates; December 18, 2023
